Sliven

The town of Sliven is located in the eastern part of the Thracian Plain, at the feet of the Sliven Balkan, 279 km east of Sofia, and 114 km west of Burgas. It is interesting to know that Sliven once sheltered so many chieftains that Bulgarians called it the "town of the hundred voivods" after the number of their chieftains. Probably the most famous feature of the town is the national park Blue Rocks, located on the northeast with extremely interesting and fascinating rock formations like the Ring, a jagged arch which height is nearly 8m and associated with several legends. One of these legends claims that some unknown ancient mariners moored their boats here during the Flood.

The Blue Rocks offer excellent opportunities for rest, sports, tourism and some other way of relaxation like hiking, mountaineering, climbing, etc. - there is a ski-track, a lake with boats, classified rock objects for mountain climbing. Other places which may draw one’s attention include the Hadzhi Dimitar House-Museum, the thousand-year-old oak tree in the town's centre that survived the burning of the medieval Sliven by the Turks, the History Museum and the nearby Mineral baths of Sliven, the 19th-century cultural centers of Kotel, Zheravna, Medven, and Katunishte.
