Koprivshtitsa
It is known that Koprivshtitsa is one of the most charming small Bulgarian towns, still preserving the authentic atmosphere of the National Revival period. It is situated in the mountain folds some 111 km east of Sofia. The town is a magnificent combination of a brave history and a fascinating present. No other Bulgarian museum town has such a large number of houses and monuments – 383, most of which have been restored back to their original appearance. An astonishing collection of ethnographical treasures, old weapons, National Revival works of art, fine fretwork, household weaves and embroidery, national costumes and typical Bulgarian jewelry has also been successfully preserved since now. It was here that the first bullet of the April Uprising against the Ottomans was fired in 1876.Koprivshtitsa becomes the cradle of the April uprising in 1876. From here goes foreward the Bloody Letter (a letter written with blood) by Todor Kableshkov. The local people of Koprivstiza take part in the uprising and the Russian-Turkish Liberating war, in the Serbian-Bulgarian war, Ilinden-Transfiguration war, and Balkan war.
Donation is one very distinguishing characteristic among the people of Koprivshtitsa at that time. They build schools, water-fountains, churches. They help each other with their own incomes in order to maintain the monastery and the writing and printing of books. Since 1965 Koprivshtisa is a permanent member of the gatherings of the national creation and work , which happen every five years in the beuatiful area Voivodenets.
