Central Mineral Bath

The Central Mineral Bath has been designed by the Bulgarian arhitect Petko Momchilov in 1906. The hot mineral spring on the spot has been used for bathing and healing purposes. It has not been functional for some time. With its magnificent architecture the complex of General Mineral Bath has become one of the symbols of Sofia. On the bottom right side of the coat-of-arms of Sofia mineral spring on blue background is shown.

The building has been finished in 1911 near the obsolete Roman and Turkish mineral baths. In 1988 the exploitation of Central Mineral baths was finished. The Central Mineral Bath has been declared a cultural monument with national significance.

The building is situated on a build-up area of 2,875 sq. m. and build-up volume of 49,100 cub. m. The façade decoration was made multi-coloured tiles forming tallies, nets and the rows of white limestone and red brick. In these intricate patterns the spirit of the Nessebar churches from the times of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom is incarnated.

It is being currently restored, to look on the outside same as it did, when it was built. The inside, for the most part, will be a Museum of Sofia History. A fraction of the building will be used as a Thermal Healing Center. The mineral water has been piped out to nearby place, from where people can fill their empty bottles and other containers and take mineral water home for free.
